This week we are joined by Stacey Moniz. As a beloved community member who is deeply rooted on the island, Stacey generously shares with us where things stand currently and helps us understand the complicated and entrenched forces that contributed to this disaster unfolding as it did. Stacey & Laura discuss grief & loss, the ineffable pain that continues to course through the island, the profound strength and devotion of her family, friends, colleagues, and fellow community members and – importantly – what we can all learn from this tragedy.

About Stacey

Stacey Moniz is a survivor. After surviving an abusive marriage, she spent 37 years working in the domestic violence arena learning the value of caring for herself and the powerful advocates she worked with. In 2020 she survived the pandemic and breast cancer and has recently begun working at Pacific Cancer Foundation, helping other Maui County residents through their cancer journeys.
In addition to her work, Stacey serves as the Vice Chair of the Maui Police Commission and on the Hawai`i State Commission on the Status of Women. She also volunteers with the Lei of Aloha for World Peace and recently completed a 2 mile ti leaf lei delivered to the Cultural Monitors in Lahaina as a reminder of solidarity and connection: like the woven ti leaves, we are one.
